Wide-to-midfield passing angle

Straighter lanes between wide players and central midfielders are the ones that break the first line. Opening the angle is not the press-breaker in this sample.

Result

It is not supported that a larger angle breaks the press.

Sample

348 organised wide-to-central or central-to-wide passes in a high or medium block. 14 matches.

All 20 matches were scanned. Six have no central midfielder labelled.

Expected goals were not in the data.

First-line break

First-line-break probability falls by 0.041 per 10 degrees of absolute angle. The match-clustered 95% interval is [-0.050, -0.032]. It excludes zero and the sign is negative, so a larger angle is less likely to break the first line.

The rate drops gradually from about 0.52 at 0–15° to about 0 once the lane is square or backward. No threshold is proposed.

Pressure and pass value

Pressure on the passer does not move with angle. The interval includes zero.

Net pass EPV falls slightly. The interval excludes zero.
